I agree. Removing it was the very first thing I did to my XP when I bought it in 1985.

Most people do think it is unnecessary, however if you search Rem. XP-100 parts you can find an exploded view which may help you. If that does not work my email is in my profile. Welcome to our family !

The counterbalance was designed to prevent accidental firing if the gun was dropped, I believe. I have deleted it for over 35 years.
