me?
XP100/Rem.7, T/C Encore, or Custom action?
Hi All,
First post, please be gentle with me.
This forum has me wanting to build a specialty pistol.
Objectives: Take down deer and wild boar at up to 500 yards. Pistol without optics to be 5lbs or under. Barrel length to be 13" to 15". The ability to shoot off barricades and bipods. I will be reloading for this build, but would like to stick with a round commonly sold at the local gun store or Walmart just because I get lazy sometimes. I like the 6.5 Creed, 260, 7mm-08, 308win, 270, 280, and 30-06, but I've got no idea what kind of velocity or energy they will have at 500 yards coming from a 13" to 15" barrel.

And finally , what action? I like the XP, but they seem to need a lot of work done to them. Pacific Tool & Gadge is selling XP100/Rem7 actions for around $350. Has anyone used these? I also like the T/C Encore. I would go this route but hear that they are not as accurate and because the barrel is not free floating using a bipod will change point of impact. If I decided to go with a custom action is there any that you all would recommend specifically for a pistol?

Thank you very much.

From your list I would go with the 6.5 Creed or 7-08

Welcome to SP. Ernie is the expert at this, but I will chime in with my 2 2cents worth. Given what you have said I would say you would do well with a center grip 6.5 Creedmoor. Welcome again and let us know what you come up with.

X2, The Creed will serve you well as would a 260 or 7-08. I have a center grip Creedmoor now with a 15" barrel and it works very well on deer sized game using mainly 120 grain Bal. Tips, also have a Remington 700 youth in 7-08 and it has become my favorite rifle( 18" barrel) Good Luck on your build and welcome to SP!! Hi

What is your MV with your 15" Creed and the 120 grain bullets?
Have you chronoed the 130 or 140 grain bullets in your creed?

Ernie,
The 120's are in the low 2800's depending on the powder used, I'm going to start some load development with the new Hornady 143 grain ELD-X bullets and Sierra 142 rain Matchkings, hopefully I can get them into the 2500+ f.p.s. range, time and testing will tell.

me?
Thanks for all the responses. It looks like I will go with the XP100 action. What are the advantages to going with a center grip as aposed to a rear grip stock? Looks like you can configure the rear grip stock as a repeater.

As for choosing a cartridge, I'm looking for 1800fps and 1000ft lbs @ 500 yards. Can anyone tell me if these velocities are realistic achieved in a 15" barrel? JBM Balistics is my info source for the following muzzle velocity.

6.5 Creed, 260, 6.5x47L.
120gr NBT @ 2700fps
123gr Amax @ 2650fps
130gr Berger VLD hunting @ 2500fps
140gr @ 2450fps

7mm-08.
140gr Berger @ 2550fps
150gr Nosler ABLR @ 2500fps
162gr ELD-X @ 2450fps
168 Berger VLD hunting @ 2450fps

308Win.
178gr ELD-X @ 2450fps
185gr Berger VLD hunting @ 2450fps

Thanks

Prefer a center-grip over a rear grip for varying field shooting positions.
Guesstimating a rear grip with bottom metal would weigh more, but maybe not when comparing it to a single-shot center-grip.
What is the biggest game animal you will be hunting?

White Tailed deer and wild boar. Nether get very big around here.

Is Mcmillain and H-S the only game in town for center grip stocks?

Are my velocity numbers way off for a 15" barrel?

Thanks

Should be close.
Aaron Alexander makes a center grip stock that is more petite

I also have a center grip xp in 6.5 creed with a 16" barrel. I get 2700 - 2750 FPS with 120 grain BT. I took a WV Whitetail doe at 300 that was a bang flop....roll roll roll roll.

Here is another center grip stock option. I have not used any of them but I have seen good reviews. They look like they may be a little more petite but not sure. I have thought I should get one to try out.

I have a 15" Savage Striker with brake (13.5" of usable barrel). Norma 180 gr. Oryx chronographs at 2490 fps and WW 168 BST registers 2594 fps. Based on these results, your .308 figures appear realistic to me. Hope this helps.
