Well at least that is what I told her!! ![]() So I have two actions that need building. But I need ideas for what to build next. One is a model 7 single shot, small bolt face The other is a model 700, .473 bolt face. Both will be rear grip. To start with. I’m not opposed to changing bolts. This is a list of bolt pistols/ calibers I now have. 17 HMR, 20 Vartarg, 22BR, 22-250, 6BR, .243 (2x), 6 Creedmore, 6.5x.284, 6.5 Saum, 7BR and 7 Saum. I like the idea of the 6.5 PRC, but with the other two 6.5’s I might have this area covered. I would love to hear what you all think. Derek. >>>——————>

25 creed is a sweetheart. 17 fireball would be a smooth one 30 nosler would be a good stomper.

All very good suggestions. I do like the idea of a 25 Caliber. Mostly because I don't have one. 22 or 25 Creed peaks my interest. I would assume these would both be heavy varmint/light big game. Such as small deer, antelope etc. ? 17 Fireball would be a fun. I really love my Vartarg. So another little one would be a good addition. Iv'e thought about building a bigger gun. Maybe a 30 caliber. But don't think it would get much use. My 7 Saum should handle my bigger needs. How about any of the Nosler rounds? I don't have any experience with them. Hey Dan L. You are very close to me. I live in the East bay. Do you belong to Avenal? A few of us will be there Saturday and Sunday. Derek >>>--------->

That looks like a very nice collection. As a 25-06 fan I think 25 caliber rounds are fun to play with. I found high BC bullet selection and fast twist barrels are a bit limited in availability compared to more popular calibers, but as you said light bullets/game that wouldn't be a problem for you. For something completely different, why not a large bore pistol? Maybe a 44 or 45 caliber straight walled cartridge? Something you can use to lob 250-500gn hunks of lead down range? Give you lots of practice calculating your drop at moderate ranges. Don't get too hung up on the "useful" idea ![]()

For a while, I was going to go with a 25 Creed...Now, I am strongly leaning toward a 25-284. I really like cartridges based off of the 284 Winchester. Ernie (xphunter) "The Un-Tactical" WY-SHOT 2022 June 20-22

Well it looks like I am leaning towards the "Last pistol I will ever build" >Until the next one< being a .25 x .284. I really want a .25 cal pistol. I would greatly appreciate any information I can get as to performance, capabilities, maximum range on both medium size animals and steel. Any first hand info would be great. Expected velocities etc. Or why would a different .25 caliber be better? Thank you all in advance. I lean greatly on the knowledge found on this sight. Derek >>>-------->

I only know about 25x284 in a rifle. Anyways. I’d reckon it’s right there with the 6.5 in killing and steel. Better hunting bullets for the 25

I cannot find much data. But how would a 25 WSSM stand up against the 25 x 284? Keeping in mind quality brass availability, ease of making cases and loading. This would be a medium size critter getter and range gun. Thanks for all of your help. Derek >>>-------->
|
Derek in the Lee Manuel second edition I can’t get a comparison all with the same bore diameter but the useful case capacities listed are 25 WSSM 3.20 cc, 6.5 creedmoor 3.12 cc, 6mm-284 3.85 cc, but 6.5x284 Norma 4.34. So far in my 25 creed xp100 I have mostly worked with 100 grain bullets and can get just over 2800 FPS and groups in the .3”-.5” range. I have hit a little over 2600 FPS with the ELDX 110 grain with excellent accuracy but the load is getting hot. I have more work to do with that bullet and the 115 NBT that I hope to do soon. Hope that helps some. Bruce

Thanks Bruce. Lots of great info. Cant wait to here your results. Derek

If you break that into percentages (which you may have already done) it looks like comparing the Creedmoor to the others you get the following. 25 WSSM + 3% 6-284 Win + 23% 6.5x284 Norma + 39% I had always assumed that the Norma was about the same as the 284 Win. case. I will have to check the cartridge drawings when I get time. That one surprised me. Bruce

After looking things over. It’s going to be a 25x284. If anyone has built one and would care to share loading info and characteristics. It would be greatly appreciated. Derek >>>—————->

I guess you are going to beat me to it. Probably either H-4831sc or H-4350, with necked down Lapua 6.5-284 brass and Fed or CCI match primers. Ernie (xphunter) "The Un-Tactical" WY-SHOT 2022 June 20-22

Maybe Ernie. Might take a while to gather parts. But I have already started. I have the action. Next carbon barrel and light weight stock. Those are my go to powders. They biggest question is how far out to seat the bullet? Probably going with something in the 110-117 area. Derek.
|
020323 ![]() |
Do some measuring with a dummy case from the head to the ogive of the bullets you are considering and come up with a compromise throat. Give yourself some room, another words, have the bullet seated a little bit deeper, so as the throat the road you can continue to seat your bullet out and still keep the same distance between the ogive and the lands. Another way of doing it, is pick your primary bullet and seat it to where the base of the bullet basically is the same as your shoulder/body juncture Ernie (xphunter) "The Un-Tactical" WY-SHOT 2022 June 20-22

Have you sourced dies? 25-284 dies have to be way more $$$ than 25-06 dies. Neither case will eject when loaded. Should be the same capacity for both. But the 25-06 you can buy everything off the shelf. Lapua makes great 06 brass too! If your going to build the 25-284 get a set of dies, make a few dummy cartridges with the bullets your considering. Send them off to JGS or Manson and have a reamer ground. That way the throat is cut the length you want. Aaron
|

Thanks Aaron It looks like dies are available from multiple manufacturers. Redding generally is my go to. Derek.
