would it be better to sell the 284 and buy a 223 setup or change barrel and bolt new to these guns but was told it could be done. just want something that does not kick so bad
Do you have a brake on it? It is easy to swap barrels and bolts too. Could always keep it and add a .223!

Just buy another XP in 223 and keep both. You would then be able to hunt everything in New Mexico and most other places as well.
A good brake can make all the difference in the world in the shoot ability of the bigger calibers. It won't make the 284 into a 223 but will make it comfortable to shoot.
I'd be interested in your 284 if you'd like to email me

Good brake makes a difference even on light barrels. 284 Win with 162 grain A-Max's
Holland Radial baffle brake.

thanks for the info. think i will try a brake and see how that helps
Is your 284 a custom build or one of the factory 7BR rechambers with zytel stock. I have 3 284's and only one has a break only because it was on the it when I bought it. The other 2 have after market barrels that add considerably to the weight along with an HS and McMillian stock that also help over the factory. Yes they still have recoil but not what I would call bad. If your wanting to use a rifle scope then a brake would be your only option.
I love it when someone posts a simple and straightforward question and someone makes a response that muddies the water, so here I go! How about keeping the 284 and buying a Nosler Independence in 22 Nosler? I keep trying to find a way for me to justify buying an Independence myself.
Good luck and good hunting.
If the OP handloads, he can assemble .284 cartridges with much less recoil. Not much data available, but a can of Trail Boss or H4895 is a lot cheaper than installing a brake...Hodgdon has reduced data.
