Who has a 221 Fireball with a longer barrel? Like 15 inches or so. What kind of velocities are you getting?

Look at the Remington 221 Fireball on Wikipedia. It shows ballistics for both a 14” and 24” barrels. With a small capacity cartridge like the 221 Fireball it looks like one can expect about 25 FPS loss or gain per 1” of barrel length. You can also look online at Remington’s website for their ammo ballistics to confirm this then you can extrapolate from that info.

I dont have a chronograph for speed but do have a 15" McGowen barrel with 1:12 twist that'll shoot lights out at 200yards(range limit) with 40 and 55 gr bullets.

I did one a while back for a silly wet shooter.

No idea what velocity but went with a 1-8 so he could shoot all the bullets. He got a couple 40x40 with it.

I have a 14" but like others have stated, never chronographed it.

Got a 22" Shilen on an XP action that is converted into a rifle. Never checked FPS. All going in the same hole so why bother.

Brett, I don't quite have what you're looking for, but I'll share w/ you what I do have. Both my loads have been run across an Oehler chronograph. I have a 12" Contender barrel in 221 FB. Using a 40 grain bullet and H4227, I get 3000 fps. OTOH, my Stevens Model 200 w/ a 22" McGowen barrel gets 3450 fps w/ H4227. I'd guess about 3150 fps?? for a 15" barrel. Let us know what you find out.

I have a 15" McGowan barreled XP-100.
I am shooting a 40 grain Hornady Z-Max over x-7 and have an average velocity of 3034 fps using my MagnetoSpeed.

Consistently shoots .5 to .7 MOA.

We have gone the other way, experimenting with very heavy bullets and a Fireball. Using a max IHMSA barrel, we are achieving around 2000 FPS using Berger 80 grain bullets. Loading is super critical as Fireballs are not real happy about pushing a very heavy bullet out of a fast twist barrel.

The round / bullet / gun worked for what it was intended knocking over full sized rams at 200 meters with a very low recoil handgun. Around 90% or better success rate. However, as said, round was a super critical loading with a difference of three tenths (0.3) grain between being too light of a load to properly expand the case and too heavy a load with pressure signs showing.

Not recommended.
