We just did a 17 Remington

Having dipped my toe into the small caliber pool, and now up to my neck 204 Practical or the 17-223. Better yet, if it were me, I would look long and hard at the 17 Predator, based off of 223. Brass may get easier to find, maybe cheaper. 17 Remington was close to $1 each. 204 brass is findable now, but was tough a while back not long ago. I suggest you go to a faster twist with the 17 and the 20. Jeff --------------------------------- G whiz, it's a Contender or a G2, never was a G One!

What do you consider small caliber and what are planning on doing with it? I have 20VT being built right now and hopefully it will live up to all the hype. Also have a 17 fireball and 204 ruger that are pretty amazing not to mention a plethora of 223's that work great and are cheap to shoot. ![]() ![]()

If you wanted to go really small a 17 hornet or 17 squirrel would be interesting. ![]()

20 Vartarg hands down. Super fun little round, easy on powder and barrels. Whats not to like. ![]() Bret IHMSA #49266 PBRC match director IHMSA Washington State Director

I have an XP in 14-221. The barrel is a bit long, so is the wood. OK, I confess, it's a rifle. M

Hey Brett, Mike is building me a Vartarg now. What are you getting for accuracy and with what powders and bullets? Also what kind of ranges can be expected given low wind etc? Always looking ahead to get the most out of each gun. Derek >>>--------->

Derek, as you probably know Mike built mine Accuracy, best group to date is 3 shot group at 100 yards of .151 center to center I believe that load was 18.0gr of H4198, RP 7 1/2BR primer with the 32gr z-max. haven't chrono'd yet but based on drops should be somewhere in the 3500fps neighborhood Last year when Mike and I went out rockchucking I got several between 350 and 450 and one at over 500. Didnt get an exact laser range on him but he was out past a tree that we ranged at around 500 we guessed it to be somewhere between 550-570. I have also had pretty good luck with AA2200. You are going to love the little VT. Bret IHMSA #49266 PBRC match director IHMSA Washington State Director

MClark , I’m having a .14/221 Walker xp being built . Might I ask what bullet and powder your using . Thanks Pat

That's awesome Bret! Thanks for the info. One of these days we will all have to get together and shoot somewhere in your neck of the woods. Yes I saw the VT Mike built for you. Awesome! Mine will be similar. But no flutes and a Rem varmint taper. Red n Black McMillan stock and a Dell trigger. The other gun he is working on is the 6 Creed with the purple stock for Lisa. That is if Christine doesn't high jack it!! ![]() Derek >>>------->

I have them in .17 Ackley Hornet, 17BR, 20 Javelina, and 20BR. Also have a .17 shrew like case. Killed a lot of PD's with the 17AH. Lots, and lots, and lots. 20BR is a small caliber bullet and it does quite well at distance. Aaron
|
Bullet is from Genco 15 grains. Load is 17.2 AA252 My recommendation is to load one round and fire for pressure. The starting load I was given blew the primer. 14's everything becomes critical.

221 Fireball. Scott | ||||

6x45 Hands Down Great accuracy and easy to use and reload Easy to get componets 20 is too finicky in windy conditions, worthless past 100 DAN

![]() I'm pretty sure that the 600 + ground squirrels I've killed with my 20 VT's might disagree with you ![]() -Mike

I believe the 20 Vartarg will be awesome. I have more squirrel kills past 100 yards than I can count using my 17 HMR Striker. So at or around 3500 fps and a 32 grain pill those little critters are in trouble! This will be my new coyote gun. Derek >>>------>

Damn, just when I thought my little Vartarg was a tack driving laser, killing chucks between 350 out past 500 yards (even with varying high desert winds). And the gong we set up at 500 yards and 3 different people stacked shot after shot into 2-3 inches. It all must have been Blind luck. What am I going to do now!! ![]() Guess I will have to start limiting my shots to about 50 yards. ![]() ![]() Bret IHMSA #49266 PBRC match director IHMSA Washington State Director

Or sell it to some unsuspecting dupe wannabe. Hey MAYBE I could use it, hmm. Where did the wife hide the check book!!
|
My .20 VT fine in the wind have several kills in the 4 - 450 yard range .
|
The factory .221 Fireball has been a bug hole maker from day one! Bug holes at 100 yards and ringing steel out to 440 yards with "sites"? What's not to love? Slap a scope on it and they all go in the same hole. ![]()
|
The stock XP in .221 Fireball works for me. Bug holes at 100 whats not to like. ![]()

Although I don't know what you mean by small, I always like the 22-250 for a do it all small caliber. Larry

I like my XP in 222 Rem Mag. With 45 or 50 grn bullets I'm only running about 300 fps under a 20-VarTarg with a 40grn bullet according the info I can find on line. When I got this XP I found a guy in Maine that had a large bag, maybe 300-350 pcs of Herters new 222 Rem Mag brass. Been shooting it for some time. For playing it will shoot the 50 grn Dogtown bullets from Midway under an inch at 100yds. With 45grn Speers and W748 it is shooting 3300fps. With the 45grn and 50 grn I'm not running much slower that the 20 VT but I have more down range energy out past 250-300 yds. I was told this pistol might have been built by Shilen Co. It has there barrel and a killer stock. Mike --------------------------------- : Don't make old people mad. We don't like being old in the first place, so it doesn't take much to tick us off.
